Drats! the Sugar Filled Junk of our Likes
The best chocolate, your favorite ice cream, warm cookies… so many of us can’t imagine living without our sweets.
And, truth be told, sugar-filled junk foods might just be the #1 downfall of “secret eaters” – those who eat forbidden foods only when family and friends aren’t around to witness it.
Even worse: most diets tell us that cravings must be controlled or eliminated, as if that were simple. But here’s the truth: cravings are an important way for our body to communicate its needs.
I’ve noticed something while working with students in our Health Coach Training Program: When they listen to their bodies, they can easily figure out what’s missing. Once they get the message, the craving vanishes. Not by magic. Simply by honoring the body’s wisdom.
If you have sweet cravings, listen to them. What is your body telling you about what it really wants?
It might want one of these things:
Movement - Physical tension can build up from hard work, lots of thinking, and stress. Exercise can help release tension in the body.
Entertainment - Bored doing tedious chores at home or with a task at work? Instead of reaching for a snack, try taking a brisk walk to change your focus temporarily.
Affection - Food can fill you, but not fulfill you. Don’t be afraid to ask for a hug when you need it. Try it with your friends, your kids, your partner, or whomever you are close with in your life.
To your health and happiness,
Heather
